- Hard Water causes the film or scum that collects on shower stalls and creates a bathtub ring when it reacts with soap products (soap scum). This can also contribute to dry skin, poor complexion and make it difficult to tint hair. Every surface the water and soap touches eventually gets covered in this "white waxy buildup" caused by soap scum. Having hard water also results in using far more soap product (many of which contain phosphates to combat hardness) because the soap first reacts with the hardness to form soap scum. This often means using harsh cleaners in an attempt clean the soap scum off bathroom fixtures.
- Municipalities use chlorine or chloramine in the disinfection of public water. These chemicals can contribute to dry eyes and skin irritation, and cause "swimming pool" odor in the water that is no fun to bathe or shower in, and many people consider it unhealthy to do so.
- Acid water occurs naturally and can't be detected by odor, smell or feel. It often causes blue-green stains on plumbing fixtures in homes with copper plumbing, often eats away the finish on chrome fixtures, and can help corrode any type of metallic piping, valves or fittings, sometimes resulting in leaky plumbing.
- Sulfur water definitely smells like "rotten eggs" and can be corrosive to metallic plumbing and water using fixtures. In homes with copper plumbing, it is common to see episodic bursts of black or gray water when turning on a faucet or bathtub.
- Iron can leave yellow to orange stains in toilet bowls, shower stalls, sinks and bathtubs. There can also be sulfur-like odors associated with iron.

Kitchens
- Common Problems

- Hard water is the film that appears on glassware in the dishwasher. Hard water can cause scale build up on the dishwashing heating elements and plug the small holes used to jet the water during cleaning cycles, shortening the life of the unit and requiring more energy to operate.
- High mineral content, iron, manganese and hydrogen sulfide (sulfur water) can alter the look and taste of beverages and cooked foods.
- City water can have a chlorinated taste and odor which is unpleasant to drink and also can alter the look and taste of beverages and cooked foods
- Bacteria, sodium, nitrates, lead, fluoride, arsenic, uranium and radium are found in some local well waters, but are otherwise odorless and tasteless; they can be harmful to you and your family even in small amounts over a long enough period.

Laundry Room
- Common Problems
- Possible Solutions

- Stain removal performance increases dramatically when hardness is removed using less soap, and better cleaning of clothes can occur at lower water temperatures, which also saves energy.
- Softened water will allow the use of 60% less detergent while still achieving improved cleaning performance and extending clothing life.
- Eliminating rust stains, sulfur odor, sediment and black manganese are critical to achieving acceptable laundry results and extending appliance life.

Utility Room
- Common Problems
- Possible Solutions

- Softened water maintains the ENERGY STAR@ ratings on your water heater by preventing rock like scale buildup, thus saving you money in energy costs and extending the life of your tank style water heater. The newer energy efficient style of instant "on-demand" hot water heaters will simply not function in a very short period when applied on hard water.
- Showerheads, faucets and household appliances will last longer; your dishes will be cleaner and clothes will stay brighter longer.
- If you update your existing water softener to a more efficient model, you will decrease salt and water consumption while lengthening the life of your plumbing fixtures, water using appliances, water heater and drinking water system.
